Recruiting in the Age of Distraction: How to Build Real Connections in a Surface-Level World

I was scrolling through my phone the other day. Five minutes turned into fifteen, and realized I hadn’t actually paid attention to anything I was seeing. Sound familiar?

We’ve all been there: scrolling, skimming, distracted, half-present.

For most of us, this is not just a one-off experience but everyday life. Constant notifications, endless feeds, and digital multitasking have created what some psychologists call “continuous partial attention.”

And now, with apps like Sora full of AI-generated content, it’s easier than ever to stay disconnected from the real world.

Here’s the bottom line: we are all distracted and disconnected.

National studies show that the average student spends over eight hours a day on screens, and yet 60 percent report feeling lonely or disconnected. That creates a huge gap (and a huge opportunity) for organizations willing to go beyond surface-level interactions and build real, human connections.

Just like scrolling past posts, potential new members can scroll past chapters without noticing the human connection behind them. They see the table, the event flyers, the Instagram posts. But do they see the people, the personalities, and the values that make your chapter meaningful?

This is recruitment in the age of distraction: a lot of motion, but not always a lot of meaning. If your chapter wants to stand out, it has to be more than visible. It has to be memorable, authentic, and relational. Every interaction, no matter how small, is a chance to turn a scroll into a connection.

The Problem with Recruitment Being Extra

Since we believe we have to live up to the distractions, we put our chapters in situations where we try to be the most flashy, loud organization (on campus and online).

We’ve all seen it: recruitment events that are extra but shallow, where potential members get caught in a carousel of activities without feeling truly known.

In a world of surface-level interactions, being flashy is no longer enough. Students crave authentic connection, belonging, and people who genuinely care about them.

Because when everything feels fake, being real stands out.

The 3 Levels of Connection

To help chapters act with purpose, we’ve created a simple framework to understand what kinds of connections they’re actually having with potential members:

● Surface-Level Connection: Potential members know your chapter exists. They’ve seen your social posts, your table, your event flyers. Awareness is important, but obviously it isn’t enough.

○ What it looks like: Think of the student who walks past your table in the student union or scrolls through your Instagram feed. They know you’re there, but they haven’t yet met a person who represents your chapter’s values or culture.

● Relational Connection: Potential members know your members as people, not just recruiters. You remember their name, ask about their classes, invite them to coffee or small group activities. This is where trust starts to form.

○ What it looks like: Inviting a PNM to join a small group study or asking about their favorite club or class shows curiosity and builds rapport. At this stage, they begin to see your chapter as a community they could be part of.

● Authentic Connection: Potential members feel fully seen, understood, and valued. They know your chapter’s values, and they envision themselves belonging long-term. These are the interactions that turn casual interest into lifelong commitment.

○ What it looks like: Helping a PNM navigate a campus challenge, including them in a group project or intramural team, or intentionally making them feel like they are already part of your organization. At this level, potential members recognize that your chapter is not just a brand; they’re connecting with real people who care about their experience.

Turning Awareness into Authenticity

Every chapter can move potential members through these levels by:

● Prioritizing conversation over events: Focus on one-on-one or small group interactions rather than counting attendees.

● Being intentional with follow-ups: Send texts, invite potential members to casual hangouts, or check in on shared interests.

● Practicing Social Excellence: Approach interactions with curiosity, generosity, authenticity, and vulnerability, showing potential members who your chapter and members truly are at their core.

● Designing memorable experiences: Shared meals, service projects, or small activities build emotional connection faster than flashy parties.

Pro Tip: People don’t join organizations. People Join People.

The more your members invest in real interactions and being their genuine, authentic selves, the more natural recruitment becomes, and the less you rely on shortcuts or “the way we’ve always done it” processes. Remember that People Join People, and that by treating potential members like the people they are, you’ll connect more (and recruit more as a byproduct).

The Ripple Effect of Authentic Connections

Moving potential members from surface-level awareness to authentic connection doesn’t just impact recruitment week. It shapes your chapter’s future.

When you recruit through genuine relationships, you attract people who stay committed, contribute to the culture, and grow into leaders who strengthen your brotherhood for years to come.

Retention rises because members feel known and valued. Chapter morale improves because relationships are built on trust, not transactions.

And years later, your alumni network reflects that same authenticity — graduates who still feel connected, invested, and proud of the experience they helped build.

When distraction is the default, authentic connection is your competitive advantage. Chapters that embrace it will attract potential members who aren’t just joining for now, but those who are staying for the long haul.
